Holiday TV specials

I gotta admit...being a history teacher, I love nostalgia. Nothing brings back memories of being a kid at Christmas like a good old fashioned holiday TV special. I was recently talking to Mrs. Taylor about Christmas TV specials and she said her favorite has always been Santa Claus is Coming to Town. I love those old "claymation" style Christmas specials too, but I think my favorites had to be Frosty and a Garfield Christmas.

Now its your turn. Do you have a favorite holiday classic?

The Grinch? Rudolph? Charlie Brown Christmas? Something more recent?

It is true that "Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a favorite of mine, but I love so many other cartoons almost as much. My favorite non-cartoon Christmas special is "Miracle on 34th street" I like the original version much better than the remake(done about 6 years ago). I could fill pages writing about this topic. I get so excited at this time of year, it is hard for me to stay focussed on the business at hand.

I am a big fan of It's A Wonderful Life. I have seen it many times and always get a lot from it. It has everything: a great story of struggle and victory, romance, angels, breaking glass, and a car accident.

I am going to have to disagree with 2 people. First of all, 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' is probably the SECOND best Christmas movie ever. THE best holiday movie is definitely 'Miracle on 34th Street'. Which brings me to my next point . . . Mrs. Taylor, the remake is so much better than the original! (Actually, I have never seen the original. . . but still).
It's the best :)

I love The Year Without a Santa Claus. I guess I'm a sucker for musicals. I love the bickering Heat Miser and Snow Miser. When my son Colin needs a haircut he starts to look like the Heat Miser. I also love The Grinch, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

The original animated "Grinch" and "The Christmas Story". For balance, I watch "The Shining" during the holidays, too.

Class of 2010-
Whoa. Easy there. The original Grinch may lack the sugar-coated, spoon-fed bells and whistles of its modern counterpart, but for those of us who value our own imaginations and the artistry involved in real animation, it is a classic. Besides Jim Carrey's performance, the new one is weak; the costume design is forced, the script has more holes than a barrel of Swiss cheese at a firing range, the set aesthetics and lighting are sophomoric. Ron Howard should have stuck with acting- all of his movies either rip off classics or exploit some cheesy American sensibility. I look forward to your critique of "The Shining".

Sorry I didn't clarify in my first post but to me the original Grinch is the only Grinch. I'm sure the great Dr. Seuss would not approve.
